Strategy vs Execution
To the untrained eye, design is all about the literal creation of assets. This falls under the category of Execution and is undoubtedly important for any finished product to arrive. However these days thanks to the internet, pretty much anyone can create any number of assets quickly and cheaply.
I have spent many years creating assets and still do for many of my clients. However I have also realised that the greatest value I can bring is not just the ability to execute tasks but also the understanding and direction as to what exactly we should be executing. This is Strategy.
When seeking the input of any professional, many of us do not know exactly what we want. But a good designer will spend time understanding the the needs of the client and developing strategy so that whatever is created has maximum effect in accordance with the goals of the other party.
Execution is about drawing the Nike swoosh. But strategy is about having the understanding as to why it would work so well.
